I cower in your wake

The glory and divine

Embittered by mistakes

All washed down with cheap wine

I reach beyond the stars

To seek the roles we’ll play

Your Venus to my Mars

On any given day

So light the torches, bar the doors

Who is the monster they’ve come for

Lying curled up on the floor

Here comes my conscience creeping

And now the fire licks the frame

To fix the slander and the shame

My heart lies heavy with the pain

Here comes my conscience creeping

I’ve stumbled to this point

Quixotic and unclaimed

To resurrect myself

Under any given name

I’ve clambered to the rise

My hands clenched in the turf

I’ve looked to you for love

The master and the serf

So light the torches, bar the doors

Who is the monster they’ve come for

Lying curled up on the floor

Here comes my conscience creeping

And now the fire licks the frame

To fix the slander and the shame

My heart lies heavy with the pain

Here comes my conscience creeping
