The First Prize
Here I am just dancing on my own again
But I can see you fixing on my gaze
Smiling like a fire in the hearth on a winter's day
And it never ceases to amaze
I never was that eloquent
But now no words seem sufficient
I'm tongue-tied, wide eyed,
And feeling like I won the first prize
I used to stare at nothing much
And find horizons hard to touch
But now they're clear
And I can see I won the first prize
Here I stand, an insecure and feeble man
How you've made me feel I'm twice my height
There are always broken dreams, regrets and scenes
But when I'm with you, all that feels alright
I never was that silver-tongued
Looked at the world like I'd been wronged
But all that's changed, it's rearranged
Now I've won the first prize
I hope to god that this endures
The storms that life will have in store
I'll race my demons
Just to keep hold of the first prize
The first prize
I know we fight like cat and dog
I know the world looks on agog
But I never doubt that
I'm holding tight onto the first prize
I can't imagine something else
A comfortable compromise
This is my destiny
I've found my one and only prize.
